  • Vehicles that drive more than 25,000 km a year, or spend time idling (such as taxis, police cars, busses, etc.) will run cheaper on propane than gasoline. Especially with today's volatile crude prices, also for environmental reasons, the cost of these fuels is likely to rise.
  • Propane tends to be 40% less expensive than gasoline in most parts of the country.
  • Propane engines can last two to three times longer than a gasoline engine.

  • There are now more than 5000 public and 2000 private propane refueling stations throughout the country. As well, the number of propane locations is on the rise, allowing for convenient refueling.
  • See our convenient locations.

  • Compared to other hydrocarbon based fuels, propane releases fewer harmful emissions into the atmosphere (about one third), which makes propane less harmful to the environment.

  • Propane tanks are only filled to 80% capacity. This ensures there is sufficient room for the liquid to expand when heated, without overflowing if the container has been filled properly.

  • Odorant is added to propane so leaks can be detected by the distinctive smell. Propane is a non-poisonous, non-toxic gas, however it can displace oxygen and cause asphyxiation.
  • Do not use in confined spaces without proper ventilation. Contact Autogas for further information.
  • All hoses and fittings are specially approved for handling propane, only use approved materials.
  • All tanks are fitted with safety relief valves that provide an escape for the gas should the tank come in contact with extreme heat.

  • Propane is an odourless gas and the addition of this odorant allows you to detect the presence of the gas in case there is a leak.

  • Boiling cabbage or rotten eggs.

  • Tanks must be transported in a secure upright position which is well ventilated. Ask an Autogas representative for further information.

  • Purging involves the removal of air and moisture from a cylinder. The presence of moisture and air in a propane container can lead to operation problems such as:
    • Erratic or poor operation of appliances.
    • Air pressure build up in the cylinder could cause the relief valve to open sooner than it normally would.
    • A mixture of the moisture, air and propane could create a chemical reaction inside the cylinder and result in the loss of the effectiveness of the odorant.

  • You must purge cylinders that have not been filled with propane.
  • You should purge cylinders after they have been re-qualified.
  • Tanks that have the valve left open when empty (certain restrictions apply).

  • Cylinders must be inspected and re-qualified at 10 year intervals and the cylinder must be stamped to indicate the re-qualification date.
